Russian folk panki dolls are made from a single piece of any tree. These are, as a rule, animals, birds or people, handling quite rudely, with a shovel!
Originally, the northern panki dolls were most likely pagan idols and pagan rituals intended for magic, but even with the arrival of Orthodoxy in the northern lands, they retained their archaic form and meaning.
Complex patterns and frescoes were made. Panki was denied details.
Her facial features were either absent in the old days, or there were barely any hollows and notches. So the master acted quite deliberately: in this way he provided protection from the intrusion of extraneous evil spirits into the doll, which, according to pagan beliefs, can penetrate through the eyes, mouth, nose and ears. And the doll had no legs: it did not come to life and did not run away, but faithfully served its master.
The peculiarity of the punks was their schematic form, or, as they say now, minimalistic design. There are no small details and details like the contours of feathers, hooves, hairs in the tail or mane, they look cooler than a modern art brut sculpture.

However, our northern ancestors used panks as toys for their children. A child could play with a panka and not be afraid to break it by dropping it. The brutal panki kid easily guessed a horse, a woman, a cow or a bird, but with all the details about the toy he had to think out the very thing that developed the imagination.
